An Inguinal Hernia is a lump that appears in the groin area. It typically affects men, but it can affect women too.
The lump may be painful and you may need to see your GP initially. It will probably limit your activities, including exercise until it is treated. Normally, this would be referred to the NHS and a Surgeon would see you and have the problem corrected.
If left untreated inguinal hernias can lead to serious complications as they often contain part of your bowel. However, surgical correction is mostly straight forward and involves pushing the contents of the hernia back into the abdomen and a mesh used to hold it in place.
Hernia Surgery Recovery
Surgical correction can be carried out either under local anesthesia or with local anesthetic and sedation. The operation takes less than an hour to carry out and is a walk-in walk-out procedure. You may need to take a week off exercise and a couple of days off from work depending on your occupation.
